This Omega De Ville represents a historic shift in watchmaking technology. Originally, the De Ville was intended to become Omega's “smart” diving watch; when it was introduced in 1967, the Seamaster was simultaneously being evolved to become more sporty. Since then, the collection has taken on an elegant life of its own, having been recreated in many different versions, most of which have little to do with diving. Perhaps its greatest claim to fame occurred in 1999, when the De Ville became the first Omega to house a movement with a co-axial escapement. This game-changing invention was originally developed by the English horological genius George Daniels in the 1970s, serving to separate the escapement's locking function from the impulse, greatly reducing loss of power to friction and improving accuracy, shock resistance, and the amount of servicing required. Omega was the first brand to commercialise the co-axial escapement, which is now used in almost all its watches.
